Things have been percolating, brewing, and simmering at the back of my mind for a while. I have been wanting to take my photography to the next level. I have been wanting to create more than just “pretty pictures.” Pretty pictures are important, of course. That is to say, beautiful light, good technique and composition are all important. An image has to be appealing to the eyes, or it’s time to call “game over.” On the other hand, meaningful photography has to go beyond “prettiness.” Does it tell a story? Will it stand the test of time? Can it bring back the most important memories?

When I was scouting locations for the Johnsons’ upcoming session, I found a cool place called the Donut Wheel in downtown Livermore, CA. On the outside, it had retro architecture and bold blue color. Out here in the suburbs, retro style and bold color are very scarce. So, I thought this place would be a cool and unusual place to take some portraits. Then, around the corner from the donut shop, a different place caught my eye. I tucked the idea into the back of my mind. I thought to myself, that would be really interesting, wouldn’t it? Is that too out there? Should I? Do I dare?
Well, I dared.
